As my civilization progresses, I begin to realize how important it is to stay innovative. In the game, you must constantly upgrade everything. After you begin to cultivate a new crop, it is important to continue to improve production techniques with new technology and culture. I feel that the easiest way to stay innovative is to be friendly with everyone you meet. I believe that everyone you meet can supply you with something. If you conquer another civilization you may gain land and manpower, but I truly believe that developing good relationships with other civilizations is more constructive. Every other culture is bound to have something to offer to you.
Real life is not unlike the game. Everyone I come in contact with I try to become as close as possible with, not only because most human beings mean well, but also because everyone something to offer to you. The world is about connections, and if you bully other cultures, all you are doing is beginning hostile relationships. If you are kind and respectful to everyone you meet, not only will you make good relationships, but you will aslo make a connection that could come in handy at any point in time. So, it's best to avoid conflicts at all times.

I agree that staying innovative is very important. But what i am interested in is what you are producing (did you decided to research railroads, electricity or what) and why did you research those ideas or items? I am personally struggling with what is more benefit and important to research at any given time. I believe having a strong standing army and contently improving my technology is very important so i focus my research around those two goals. Also, is there some sort of line that if other nations cross would you go to war and are you ready for war? I completely agree that staying friendly and peaceful with other nations is crucial in playing the game; however, i do believe that you have to be ready for anything.
I absolutely agree 100 percent with everything you have to say about creating relationships and also the fact that staying on top of the new technologies and new products that you are able to produce is crucial. I felt the same way when it came to relationships, and then i got cocky and totally blew it. If you stay friendly with your neighbors, it should work out positively in the long run. You never know when you might need something, and all you have to do is ask your neighbor. Good strategy and let me know how it works out.
I also agree with you that relationships are extremely important. In my game there are five civilizations left standing, and three have already been conquered. What surprised me at first was the fact that those three civs were destroyed and mine was not (considering that those civs were much larger than mine). I came to realize that my tiny civ was spared because I was at peace with everyone. Any civ could have easilly conquered mine if they decided to start a war, but they chose not to because I offered them trade and occassional gifts of gold. My reasoning for offering gifts is that the gold I give away to remain at peace is far less than the amount that I would be giving up by supporting a huge army. Due to the facts that I have been able to free up a little bit of extra gold and that I am peaceful with everyone, I am able to focus on scientific advancements. Science will hopefully advance my civ to a point where it becomes stronger than every other civ, and instead of offering gifts of gold to them, they will making offerings to me. For now it is in my best interest to do whatever I can to please the other civs.
